The study patch used in the LUMINOUS Study contains the same hormones as combined hormonal contraceptive pills.
Contraceptive patches are designed to help women achieve consistent and correct use of contraception, which is important in preventing pregnancy.
The flexible study patch looks like a band-aid and is applied to the skin of the upper arm, stomach, buttock, or back. The study patch is worn in 4-week cycles, for 3 weeks on (replaced once every 7 days), followed by 1 week off.

Study information
What to Expect
The LUMINOUS Study requires a dedicated commitment from participants, and a willingness to disclose information about:
- your menstrual cycle
- your sexual activity
- use of back-up or emergency contraception
- your use of and response to the study patch.
You will need to demonstrate the ability to:
- keep a daily electronic diary (e-Diary) to record the information above
- apply the study patch yourself
- undertake home pregnancy tests.
There will be 7 study center visits – these will include some physical and health checks, pregnancy testing and checking the study patch site.
There will be 9 telephone follow-up visits with the study staff to continue checking
on your health, use of the study patch and e-Diary entries.
Insurance is not needed to join this clinical study, and compensation for your time will be available.
